According to Glassdoor

, the average cost of hiring a new employee in 2019 was $4,000.

There’s got to be a better way.

But, before we get too ahead of ourselves, let’s make sure we understand what hiring costs actually are. Hiring costs are the sum of your internal costs (ATS systems, referral rewards, recruiting staff, etc.) and your external costs (marketing materials, job boards, recruitment tech). Sometimes referred to as recruiting costs, they can easily spiral out of control.

Understanding this metric – and more specifically, your cost-per-hire (total hiring costs divided by employees hired in a period) – is key to saving money and making smart recruiting decisions.

While every dollar of your company’s hiring spend might seem worth it on paper, here are three ways to control costs.

Compare the CPH of Each Hiring Resource

Your company’s open positions are more than likely shared across some combination of social media, job boards, and your website. Do the work to calculate an approximate cost-per-hire for each platform.

Is LinkedIn’s CPH suspiciously higher than Indeed’s? Is your website’s significantly lower than Facebook’s?

Use this new understanding to adjust your budget accordingly. Don’t pour money into a platform that isn’t working as efficiently for you – you should be getting the full bang for your buck.

         Streamline Training and Onboarding

A new employee doesn’t reach full productivity until after the first 8 to 26 weeks in a new position, found a

            .

What does that mean for you? Hidden costs – and lots of them. The same study reported decreased productivity from new employees could cost between 1% and 2.5% of total revenue. Finding ways to minimize resistance in your company’s training and onboarding could reduce hiring costs dramatically.

         Digitize Paperwork

Train new employees in groups. Have a well-documented, easy-to-follow training process for everyone involved.

         Revamp Your Job Ads

When it comes to job advertisements, consistency and clarity are essential. This might be a candidate’s first (and potentially only) interaction with your company, so to reduce bounce and encourage quality applications, make it count. Here’s how:

While there’s no way to eliminate hiring costs completely, making well-informed decisions with the information you have is key to ensuring your dollars are working as hard as they can.

So you landed the interview. Congratulations! Although it sometimes goes overlooked by job candidates, dressing appropriately is one of the best ways to impress your interviewer.

Not sure where to get started? You’ve come to the right place.

         Study up on Dress Codes

First thing’s first, check out the company dress code.

Showing up overdressed is not likely something to worry about, but underdressing is a legitimate concern. “The interview dress rule of thumb is that you dress one or two levels higher than the job that you’re going for,”

Kate Wendleton, president and founder of career counseling and outplacement firm The Five O’Clock Club, recommends

Make sure you understand the difference between business casual and business formal, for example. Dark pants and a button-down shirt or blouse are usually fine for casual workplaces. A business-casual environment could mean dress pants with a button-down shirt, belt, and tie for men; for women, this could mean dark dress pants or a dark skirt with a blouse and cardigan.

However, business professional or business formal almost always means a suit – or a well-fitting dress – if you prefer to go that route.

Tips for Dressing Well for an Interview:

Regardless of what you decide to wear, keep the following in mind:

An appropriate interview outfit will help you look and feel your best – which translates to more confidence for you and an ultimately unbeatable interview.

How to Refresh Your Resume

Whether you are on the hunt for a new job or happy with your current position, keeping your resume up to date is critical. You don’t want to have to revamp your resume every time you search for a job, and you never know when an opportunity will present itself. Here are five tips you can use to keep your resume fresh, professional, and interesting.

         Know Your Keywords

Most employers use automated software to filter resumes for keywords. Resumes that don’t include the correct keywords are automatically kicked out of the system. That’s why your resume must include relevant skills, knowledge, and applicant qualities.

Make sure each resume you send out incorporates keywords from the original job posting, but beware of keyword stuffing, and don’t use empty adjectives.

         Limit Experience to 15 Years

           According to TopResume.com

, only relevant roles within the past 15 years are necessary for your resume – especially when trying to stick to a one-page limit. Similarly, consider leaving out your graduation date when it’s been more than 15 years, so you do not leave yourself open to age discrimination.

         Reorganize

Although this might seem obvious, place the most relevant parts of your resume at the top of the page. Your resume is a marketing document – the information that first catches the hiring manager’s attention will encourage them to keep reading. “Put the best stuff ‘above the fold,'”

           writes TheMuse.com

          .

         Stand Out with Intent

Use your discretion here. A pop of color or well-placed icon can certainly draw an HR manager’s attention, especially in a creative field. However, in a more technical field, an overly formatted resume with a garish font or graphics could do more harm than good.

         Make It Easy

Your resume is likely to be one of dozens, if not hundreds, so make it easier for the hiring manager. Make sure your resume is named appropriately (consider “John Doe Resume” instead of simply “Resume”) and save it as a PDF to avoid any issues in opening the document.

Try sending your resume to yourself or a friend first to check for problems with formatting. And, although it should go without saying, proofread, proofread, proofread!

What do Google, Uber, LinkedIn, and Microsoft have in common?

Probably more than one would think, but, most importantly, all four began as startup companies – and all four companies had the right people in the right place when their businesses grew.

We can’t guarantee these tips will take you to the top of the hypothetical growth leaderboard overnight, like Google or Microsoft. However, understanding the importance of placing the right talent in the right roles before you begin the scaling process will provide countless benefits for your organization, regardless of size.

      According to McKinsey & Company

, companies with successful talent alignment outperform competitors 2 to 1.

Determine Your Important Roles Ahead of Time

Make sure you understand which jobs will play the most critical roles. Identify what a candidate needs to succeed in the position (i.e., skills, education, personality traits) and search your talent pool for those requirements.

It’s also important to consider your company culture. Regardless of how a candidate looks on paper, not everyone will be a great fit for your office atmosphere. Trust your gut on this one.

  Don’t Rush the Process

As the head of a growing business, you’re likely “wearing all the hats,” so this one is tricky.

Consider, however, the long-term benefits of taking the time to hire the right candidates – the most important of which is knowing you made the right decision for the sustained health of your business.

On the other hand, don’t wait too long to hire key leaders, or you’ll find yourself in a crisis. Develop a plan to hire these C- and D-level positions, then stick to it.

  Prioritize Diversity

“In 2019, top-quartile companies (in ethnic and cultural diversity) outperformed those in the fourth one by 36 percent in profitability,”

      reported this study

    .

Introducing diversity to your team can bring about depth in perspectives, more profitability, and higher productivity. And not only does it translate to more business success – studies have shown diversity is a factor sought out by candidates.

And once you’ve found the right people…

  …Keep Them with You

There are dozens of ways to maintain employee engagement, but consider the following as you expand your business:
